A Day in the Life of a Volunteer First Responder

Every disaster response begins with a call—a moment that transforms routine life into action. For Sarah, a volunteer with Operation Providing Hope, that only a few short days following the arrival of Hurricane Helene. Hurricane Helene had made landfall, flooding entire cities and leaving families stranded across Western North Carolina. Without a second thought, Sarah packed her bags and prepared for deployment, knowing the days ahead would test her physically and emotionally.

.

After arriving in Black Mountain, NC, on Tuesday afternoon, Sarah joined her team to assess the situation. Roads were submerged, power lines down, and panicked calls for help poured in. The first task was to rescue a family trapped in their home as rising waters threatened to engulf them. Navigating treacherous roadways by foot, broken asphalt, landslides, downed trees, and scarps littered the area. Sarah felt the weight of responsibility—one wrong move could put lives at risk, including her own.

While walking, she heard a faint call for help, to her surprise, approximately 60 feet down the mountain stood a man. A teammate carefully tethered to a tree and lowered down the mountain to reach the house. An elderly gentleman, about 80 years of age, stood on his porch with his small black poodle. His only access to the main road was blocked by many large trees. Despite the danger, Sarah and her team worked tirelessly for 7 hours, to clear the driveway and ensure the man and his dog, could safely be evacuated.

By the time the rescuers reached his home, exhaustion had set in, but the gratitude in the man's eyes made it all worthwhile. Sarah felt a profound sense of purpose—her efforts had provided not just safety but hope.

The challenges of disaster response are immense: long hours, physical strain, and emotional toll. Volunteers often face dangerous conditions, limited resources, and heartbreaking situations. Yet, it is this work that Sarah describes as the most rewarding. "It’s not just about saving lives," she says. "It’s about reminding people they’re not alone in their darkest moments."

Operation Providing Hope empowers volunteers like Sarah with the training and tools needed to act decisively. From rescue boats to medical supplies, every resource is vital. But the true strength lies in the volunteers’ dedication, a commitment driven by compassion and the belief that every life matters.

For Sarah, being part of Operation Providing Hope isn’t just a role—it’s a calling. Each rescue is a reminder of the power of community and the profound impact of helping others in times of need.
