A Day in the Life of a Volunteer First Responder
Every disaster response begins with a call—a moment that transforms routine life into action. For Sarah, a volunteer with Operation Providing Hope, that only a few short days following the arrival of Hurricane Helene. Hurricane Helene had made landfall, flooding entire cities and leaving families stranded across Western North Carolina. Navigating treacherous roadways by foot, broken asphalt, landslides, downed trees, and scarps littered the area. While walking, she heard a faint call for help, to her surprise, approximately 60 feet down the mountain stood a man. A teammate carefully tethered to a tree and lowered down the mountain to reach the house. An elderly gentleman, about 80 years of age, stood on his porch with his small black poodle. His only access to the main road was blocked by many large trees. Despite the danger, Sarah and her team worked tirelessly for 7 hours, to clear the driveway and ensure the man and his dog, could safely be evacuated.
By the time the rescuers reached his home, exhaustion had set in, but the gratitude in the man's eyes made it all worthwhile. Sarah felt a profound sense of purpose—her efforts had provided not just safety but hope.
